| | Dive guiding for Hantu bloggers today. Vis is 2-3m, not so good. Usual suspects include 6 banded angelfish, moonies, nudis(but did not see ceratosama). Luckily maanged to see seahorse, else stress ah. Also saw a long nose pipefish, 1 tiny bornella anguilla and 2 tritonia(1about 2-3cm, the other 1cm). Hope Gerald and Jonathan had fun diving today. |
Today we conducted our reef survey in Hantu. Meeting point is RSYC, and we have 5 of us this time, Jeff, CY, J, SL, and I. With so little of us, our main focus this time was doing LIT, only when we have the time, then we carried out fish and invert survey. Like the other reef survey in Kusu organised by CY, Jeff is our super doper SO that alone could do the shallow transect. The rest of us did the deep one. SW and J buddied up to do the tape laying, while CY and I did the LIT.
The weather looked cloudy initially, but cleared up. The water looked greenish to me, but to my surprise, the vis today was very good. It was about 3-5m, and we could see the shallow tapes when we were in the deep transect. It took us quite a while just to do 2-3 transect...I tried my best to figure out the coral genera, hopefully I got it right. Kind of mixed up too with DCA and rubbles...good thing CY had a camera, so we took photos of the corals that we were not so sure.
After lunch, we managed to have some time, and continued with fish and invert survey. All was done by 2.30pm or so. Our hantu still has much to offer...both sides of the reef, there were lots of Gonipora coral...though we did not see much nudi, other than 2 big ceratosama, 1 chromodoris lineolata, a sap sucker, a few flatworms, 2 cuthona sibogae, CY saw eggs of nudi with 4 black margin glossodoris, we did see many fishes, and a sea snake too. The sea snake was not too big, less than 1 metre. We saw blue spotted stingrays, 2 pipefish, anemonefish, 2 adult sweetlips (or was it the same one?), razorfish, little butterflyfish, and angelfish, etc. Icon seastars....all in all, good dive today...with no photos, cos i didn't bring my camera. Next reef survey may be on 28 Jun.
Oh, I finally returned the lost camera I found during the last reef refresher dive to the owner....however the clip for the housing actually corroded as it was underwater for so long....camera however was fine....as a token of appreciation, i got a mask. :)
| | Today was a bright, sunny day. The water for whatever reason had loads of jellyfish, and some of us, while we surfaced, were stung. Ouch! I forgot to bring my booties after washing them on thursday, luckily I still managed to dive, wearing just my open heel fins, tightening them to the max. Did 2 dives with CH, and Samson, 1 in the south jetty, the other in western fringing reef. Vis abt 3-4m. Current: little. Did not manage to find frogfish though, still the dives were nice. Despite many dives in Hantu, there are still surprises offered by our local reef. |
| | This is supposed to be a dive that coral may spawn, and we would help to collect data, and take photos. But guess it was not our luck, we waited after the tapes were laid, but it did not take place. A pity...to think my buddy and I thought we did see some spawning...but it turned out to be the tentacles of the corals swaying along with the currents. Still, we managed to take some shots of the underwater creature and the corals... |
| | This was a self organised trip meant initially for some of us volunteers, if not those more active in advocating reef protection, but some could not make it for the trip. Most of us were also avid photographers and through this trip I realised my skills had deproved...time to brush up. We were blessed with pretty good weather, it was initially sunny then cloudy in the later part but did not rain. The surge was pretty mild for kusu, as the few times here I have experienced very rocky sea, but there was some current and tide was high since it was spring tide. We went to a max depth of about 17 to 18m unknowingly for the initial descent despite not too far from the breakwaters, and it got pretty dark. My buddy and I were like wonderingly...mmm....was it supposed to be so deep here? Still, we managed to see 2 sawtooth shrimps, a few crinoid shrimps on sea whips or fans, flatworms, nudis, like the swimminfg bornella, not one but 3(or at least 2 if it swam to another location and we thought it was another one), and 1 ceratosama but smaller compared to hantu ones.

| | We have 11 people for this trip, a few first timers too. Vis is pretty good, at least 3m. Started out our survey and curent is calm and manageable. Then by end of 2nd transect, current really picked up, and it is hard to count the fishes as well as do the survey. Some of us were drifted far out and had to be picked up by the boat too. Good thing I followed the transect back to the starting point, hence I did not have to fin much and the boat is just where I surfaced. Only thing more exciting for this trip was the big cuttlefish that I saw. Gina however managed to see a turtle, how nice.

| | After almost 3 mths of staying dry, I dove with The Hantu Bloggers as a guide today. The weather is good, and the vis is good too, about 3m and no one to disturb the sea bed. It's spring tide, so tide was high. Other than a bit of hiccups in the gears, the dives were fine. First over in western reef, 2nd over the jetty, where current is pretty strong. By the way, I lost my compass over at the jetty (2nd time I lose my stuff). Any kind souls who found it, can return to me? Thanks so much! |
| | It's been months since I dove in Hantu. Today, went back to help out as a guide, with Geraldine as buddy. Hope she got some good shots! Min current, vis is pretty good, about 3m. 1st dive at north jetty, 2nd dive at western fringing reef. Saw lots of moonies, ceratosama, rabbitfishes, seahorse, nudis, flatworms, juvenile batfish, whip gobies, juvenile sweetlip, pipefish, crab, filefish, comet, etc. |
| | This is the first time I dive in Raffles Lighthouse. It's very beautiful indeed, and the water is nice today despite the rain. Vis should be about 5m. I didn't take many shots, nor are they very clear. The shots are for record purpose and with the trap, it is more difficult to focus the camera. Managed to see 2 bornella species, flatworms and huge fusiliers. Highlight of the day: Shark! Again, when I didn't take my camera, but luckily my buddy did. This shark looks more grey and maybe sleeping on the coral rubbles. I conclude, best time to dive in our waters is between feb to apr. |
| | My main role is to guide Jeff and Eunice. Not much photos taken this time, but saw icon seastars, flatworm, gymnodoris, crinoid shrimp, six banded angelfish, crabs, HUGE cuttlefish, etc... Taken with C5050. Vis 2-3m, except for the 2nd dive in small patch reef, initially <1m vis. |
| | This is a leisure trip for me. Buddies are Minsheng and Ivy(finally touched water after 6mths staying dry). Western fringing reef and small patch reef. Minsheng is our spotter who really find a lot of stuff for us. Saw icon seastar, featherstars, filefish, tiny sap suckers, acopora shrimp, pipefish, blue spotted stingray( its tail), etc. |
